PROFESSOR EMERITUS DR DEREK GRAY

McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada

 Presentation Title:

Lignocellulose In A Sustainable Bioeconomy

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Dr. Gray received his B.Sc. from Queen's University, Belfast. He then spent a year with Voluntary Service Overseas in Georgetown, Guyana before moving to Canada where he received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in polymer chemistry. After postdoctoral appointments in the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, and the University of Toronto, Canada, he joined the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada in Montreal, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Chemistry, McGill University, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. His research interests are in polymer, colloid and surface chemistry, with emphasis on the properties of wood, pulp and paper and cellulose. He has published more than 200 publications in refereed journals, with over 14,000 citations to his research. Discoveries from his research group have included the first reported formation of liquid crystalline cellulose derivatives, and the preparation and self assembly of cellulose nanocrystals to give chiral nematic suspensions and ordered films. These unexpected properties have led to wide interest in the production and application of nanocellulosic materials. He received Anselme Payen award of the American Chemical Society in 1994, and the Marcus Wallenberg Prize in 2013 for scientific achievements relevant to forestry and forest industries.

SESSION INVITED SPEAKER

PROF. DR. MOHD ALI HASSAN

Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia

Presentation Title:

Oil Palm Biomass Biorefinery for Future Bioeconomy

Prof. Dr. Mohd Ali Hassan’s vast experience and expertise in the field of biotechnology and biomolecular sciences have enabled him to become a national point of reference in the area of biomass, renewable energy and waste utilization. Holding firmly unto the concept of ‘waste-to-wealth’, he led the Environmental Biotechnology Research Group (EB Group) which was initiated officially in 2005 to undertake research in core areas of biomass utilisation, specifically in production of renewable and valuable green bioproducts. The use renewable resources, particularly biomass from the oil palm industry, and conduct research in the areas of bioenergy, bioproduct, biomaterials and biocompost. He has also served as a consultant to The Science Advisor Office, Prime Minister’s Department, on the national project on biomass utilisation and is the national representative for the Asia Biomass Association headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

DR. VIJAYA SUBRAMANIAM

Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysia

Presentation Title:

Carbon Footprint Reduction Practices in the Malaysian Oil Palm Industry

Dr. Vijaya Subramaniam is attached to the Engineering and Processing Research Division under the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). She is currently working as a Senior Research Officer and served as the Leader of the Environment research group under the Energy and Environment Research Unit. Her area of research focuses on the discipline of Life Cycle Assessment for palm oil and the oil palm industry, water footprint, carbon footprint, sustainability and recovery of residual oil (waste to wealth program). Dr. Vijaya has many publications mainly on life cycle assessment of oil palm industry. She also has published book chapters for Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities. She also actively presents papers at national and international proceeding. One of her latest papers entitled “Water Footprint of the Production of CPO a Cradle to Gate Case Study Using the Water Footprint Network Methodology” was presented at International Palm Oil Congress PIPOCC 2013 in Kuala Lumpur.

DR. JAN E.G. VAN DAM

Wageningen UR, Netherlands

Presentation Title:

Biopolymer Innovations and Product Development in The Netherlands

Jan E.G. van Dam is senior scientist at Wageningen Food and Biobased Research (WFBR) institute, with specialization in the application research for sustainable lignocellulosic fibre in industrial processes. He studied bio-organic chemistry at the Utrecht State University and has been working on chemical and biochemical carbohydrate modification and processing of plant fibres and polysaccharides. He is member of the excutive board of the European Polysaccharide network of Excellence (EPNOE). He has been involved in a large number of projects addressing fibre formation, fibre processing and quality, application development in paper and pulp, textiles, composites and building materials. He has been initiating international cooperation for fibre crop innovation (jute, coconut, cotton, kenaf, kapok, sisal, bamboo) and sustainable development of biobased materials, including biorefinery of agricultural by-products to produce “green chemicals” from for example palm oil residues, coffee residues and find value from lignin application. Biopolymer innovation for packaging product development is one of the key topics of interest for green policies.
